Interview Tips

The job interview is one of the most daunting parts the job search process. The fact that you were requested for a job interview is very encouraging and suggests that the employer has seen something in the resume that he/she likes. This process will also help you determine whether you like the organisation and job as well, and to see whether the job is a good fit for both parties.

The goal of the job interview is to show the employer that you have the skills, background, and ability to do the job and that you can successfully fit into the organisation and its work cultures. Employers will look for an individual who is confident, enthusiastic, positive and is an effective communicator.

Before the Interview

Research

Carefully research the job and the company before the interview. You should be reasonably well acquainted with the company and the type of work they do. Visit the prospective employers website for material about job descriptions, company annual reports and a copy of the companys mission statement.

Practice Makes Perfect

You can never prepare enough for a job interview. Practising with a friend or family member can help pre-interview nerves. Rehearsing will give you an opportunity to streamline your thoughts and it will also improve your communication skills and confidence. Your partner can advise you if youre speaking too quickly, or if your answers are too convoluted and long-winded. Use their feedback constructively to ensure your answers are clear and succinct.

Rehearse Answers to 'Behavioural' Questions

A behavioural question often begins with the phrase Can you give me an example of and requires the interviewee to provide a past example of their behaviour as an answer. The response can be from a work or real life experience and endeavours to discover how an interviewee responds to a particular situation or circumstance.

Pre-Interview Check

Know the name and title of each and every person you will be meeting with. If there are pronunciation difficulties, clarify them before you arrive. The HR department or receptionist can provide you with these details. Confirm all important details such as names, times and location.

Appearance

Dress suitably for the interview. Ensure your clothes are clean and well ironed. Avoid visual distractions and strong or loud colours. Wear your best, most professional work outfit. Switch off your mobile, or better still, leave it behind.

Arrive on Time

Allow ample time for travelling and parking the car if need be. If you are late for any reason beyond your control, stay calm - explain and apologise.

During the interview

  • Shake hands warmly with a firm grip and smile.
  • Relax and feel confident.
  • Keep your answers relatively short and to the point. If the interviewer wants more information, he or she will ask for it. Try to avoid answering with just a "yes" or "no". Avoid one-word answers. If an answer is complex, take time to sum up. If something seems unclear to you, ask for clarification.
  • Look at people as you speak to them. If there is more than one person at the interview, try to address both or all of them during the interview.
  • Be yourself. Speak clearly and enthusiastically about your experiences and skills.
  • Listen carefully.
  • Be positive.
  • Be poised. Pay attention to non-verbal behavior. Look the interviewer in the eye, sit up straight with both feet on the floor. Avoid nervous habits.
  • Don't say anything negative about a past employer.
  • Don't interrupt anyone.
  • Prepare something for when you are invited to ask questions. Two to three questions is enough. Some examples are who you will be reporting to, questions about the team you would be joining, career path options, projects you could be working on.
  • It is only acceptable to discuss remuneration once the client has suggested that you are likely to be successful. Otherwise you should avoid detailed discussions about money until the first offer is made.
