What is a Sonographer?

A Sonographer, also known as an ultrasound technician, are experts in using ultrasound machines to images of the human body to assist in the identification and diagnosis of medical technicians.

Most Sonographers work in obstetrics and gynecology taking pictures of the female reproductive system and fetuses in the womb.  However sonography is also used to examine many other areas of the body.

What do Sonographers do?

The day to day tasks of sonographers include:

  • Using specialized ultrasound equipment to create images of structures inside the body
  • Assisting doctors to undertake examinations of patients and to assist in the diagnostic process
  • Learning new sonography related techniques and technologies

 

What makes a good Sonographer?

Good sonographers:

  • Are well trained and competent
  • Analytical, flexible and eager to learn about new technologies
  • Empathetic to their patients needs, and sensitive to the emotional concerns and fears of the patient

 How do I become a Sonographer?

The most direct route to becoming a sonographer is to complete a Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging followed by a post graduate diploma in ultrasound.  To search for courses click here.
