Description

The combined course of Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery is designed to provide specialist skills related to the theoretical, practical, policy, evaluative and research frameworks for nursing and midwifery.

Students may elect to exit the combined program and complete the Bachelor of Nursing requirements only.



Clinical practice



Beginning soon after commencement of the course, early exposure to the clinical environment gives students extensive opportunities to develop clinical skills in a variety of settings including acute/sub-acute care, medical and surgical care, midwifery, paediatrics, aged care, rehabilitation, community nursing and mental health nursing. Students will spend over 60 percent of the course duration in various health care settings, including hospitals and community health centres in metropolitan, rural and regional areas.

Professional recognition
On successful completion of this combined course, students will be eligible for registration as a nurse in the Division 1 register of the Nurses Board of Victoria and for the additional qualification of midwife in the Division 1 register.

Requirements

Prerequisites for year 12 applicants: - VCE units 3 and 4 – mathematics (any) and a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English.

Career opportunities
After successfully completing the Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery, graduates will be well prepared to work as a Registered Nurse and as a Midwife. Graduates may pursue a career in a range of areas including: hospitals, homes, hospices, aged care, clinics, schools, universities, community health centres, government agencies and industries. In addition, consistent with a pregnant woman’s chosen model of care, graduates may work in hospital-based services as well as the community setting. It is expected that graduates will look at continuing professional development throughout their careers.
