Description

The three-year Bachelor of Nursing offers a formal curriculum, which contains all of the subjects mandated for nursing accreditation in Western Australia, while placing strong emphasis on clinical and hospital experience. The course focuses on the nurse-patient relationship and is highly practical in its orientation. Nursing students undertake a comprehensive university program, including specialist nursing studies, behavioural and health science, professional development and the compulsory Core Curriculum units. They also undertake a significant amount of clinical practice each year in a variety of hospital and health care settings where they are mentored by experienced registered nurses.
Graduates of this course will be capable of providing high quality care in a compassionate, respectful and just manner.

The Bachelor of Nursing is a course of three years full-time duration, which prepares students to be registered with the Nurses Board of Western Australia.
The course has 4 broad study streams:

• Personal and Professional Development

• Nursing Care: Theory and Practice

• Health Science

• Behavioural Science

The course uses a problem solving and best practice approach in teaching. Theoretical and practical components are integrated and aligned.
Some of the areas covered in the course include Aboriginal people, communications, developmental psychology, disease prevention, paediatric nursing, pharmacology, counselling skills, mental health, research methods, theology, community care, legal and ethical issues in nursing, Human body and histories and theories of nursing.

The Bachelor of Nursing prepares students as beginning practitioners able to work in a variety of hospital and health care settings. The course provides a basis for future self-development and will enable students to continue to develop in all fields of health care delivery.

Requirements

Applications are encouraged from students of all ages. The comprehensive entry requirements consider past academic performance as well as personal accomplishments and suitability for the course. Prospective students must be able to demonstrate good verbal and written skills. Human Biology and English at TEE level would be valuable. All students are required to complete a Senior First Aid Certificate and meet immunisation requirements.

Examples of minimum entry requirements are:
 TER score of 60 or more or,
 A WA Certificate of Education demonstrating primarily “A” and /or “B” grade averages or,
 Mature age STAT score over 145, or
 Tertiary Enabling Program, credit average grades

Notes

The Bachelor of Nursing program is a three year full time program. Students are admitted to the Bachelor of Nursing in the first semester (February) intake. A limited number of places are offered in second semester for students to undertake core units prior to commencing the Bachelor of Nursing program.
The Bachelor of Nursing program can also be offered to students who live away from Broome. This blended delivery format incorporates the use of a synchronous virtual classroom and on campus delivery blocks.

The Broome Campus offers quality on-site accommodation in the Student Village. The Village is made up of the Student Hostel which provides short-term accommodation for students who attend „block study‟ programs and the Student Housing which is made up of nine separate houses for students studying fulltime for at least one semester.
