Description

Nurses promote health and wellbeing for individuals, groups and populations whereas a midwife is able to supervise, care for and provide advice to women during pregnancy, birth and postnataly.

This courses aims to produce a nurse midwife who is a highly capable individual able to work in partnership with a range of health-care professionals and in a variety of practice settings. Monash graduates are eligible for registration as a Registered Nurse and Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

This course is a unique tagged degree that offers students the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge in both fields and prepares them for careers as a midwife or a nurse.

On completion of the Bachelor of Nursing Practice and Bachelor of Midwifery graduates will be able to:
• practice within the scope of practice and standards set down by the Australian Nursing Council Inc (ANCI) national competencies for registered nurses and Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) national competencies for midwives
• provide beginning-level holistic health care for individuals and communities in our multicultural society
• practice within ethical and legal guidelines
• plan, implement and evaluate care that encourages individuals to achieve optimum health and well being
• demonstrate knowledge that is evidence-based and underpinned by sound political, historical, cultural and
• social understandings of health
• appreciate the significance of ongoing education and research to improve practice
• work collectively and collaboratively with others on the health care team and value the partnerships formed with people in their care.

Requirements

Minimum entrance requirements
Equivalent Australian Year 12.

Minimum entrance requirements for non-school-leavers
The entire academic record including GPA will be considered

VCE prerequisites
Units 1 and 2- two units (any study combination) from general mathematics or mathematical methods (CAS), or Units 3 and 4-mathematics (any). Units 3 and 4-a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English.

International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites
•A score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL, and
•A score of at least 3 in any mathematics subject.
