Description

Graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing will embody the UTAS graduate attributes and are expected to be able to:
* demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for competent practice in a range of health care settings as documented in the ANMC Registered Nurse Competency Standards - 4th Edition (2006);
* function in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses in Australia (ANMC, 2008), the Code of Ethics for Nurses in Australia (ANMC, 2008), principles of social justice and cultural safety;
* demonstrate an innovative, flexible, and self-directed commitment to the promotion, maintenance and restoration of health, and to the prevention of disease across the lifespan;
* employ critical, analytical and reflective abilities within their nursing practice;
* understand the importance of lifelong learning within professional practice;
* function as part of a multidisciplinary health care team by demonstrating the ability to consult and refer according to the Scope of Practice Decision Making Framework (NBT, 2006);
* incorporate their understanding of contemporary local and national health care priorities, including chronic disease self-management, integrated care models, mental health reforms, quality and safety management and workforce reforms into nursing practice; and
* employ a range of technologies to enhance their professional development and support the health care they are providing.

Students undertaking the - BN, may be required to undertake Professional Experience Placement in the southern, northern or north-western region of Tasmania depending on clinical placement availability. There are restricted numbers of clinical placements in all regions and students may be required to relocate to undertake professional experience.

Requirements

Students in courses offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery that have compulsory clinical components must apply for a National Police History Record check (NPHRC), in order to be placed in health care agencies. The NPHRC must be completed before a student can attend any Professional Experience Placement.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery will require all students to acknowledge their understanding and acceptance of the Faculty of Health Science Infectious Diseases Policy at the time of or as soon as practicable after enrolment. Students will be required to sign a declaration that states they have both read and understood the policy and recognise their rights and responsibilities under the policy, and return the signed declaration to the School by the date stipulated.

Students who are required to undertake Professional Experience Placements must document their compliance with the immunisation policy by providing a completed Health Care Provider Form and, if applicable, a completed Tuberculosis Screening Form to the School in which they are enrolled prior to commencement of the first placement.


Enrolled Nurses wishing to undertake the Bachelor of Nursing with advanced standing must have an Australian current practising certificate and be medication endorsed prior to commencing the course. Applicants must have proof of employment for six months full-time or 12 months part- time immediately prior to applying for admission to the BN.



In order to commence workplace learning outside of the University of Tasmania (including ¿Professional experience placements and visits) students are required to demonstrate compliance with the Faculty of Health Science and the School of Nursing and Midwifery policies relevant to workplace based learning. These include the Police Check Policy and Procedures, Infectious Disease Policy, Code of Conduct and Student Placement Agreement.

Notes

The University of Tasmania provides an accredited course from which graduates are eligible to apply for registration as a nurse in Australia.

If you are intending to apply for registration as a nurse in another country you must meet the requirements stipulated by nursing councils, licensing boards or colleges. Therefore, you should contact the registration authority in the county in which you wish to register to determine the requirements.
