Bachelor of Preventive Health
Description
The Bachelor of Preventive Health at Notre Dame focuses on promoting individual and community health and well being. Students will develop a clear understanding of how the social and other health determinants influence the health and well being of individuals and communities. Socio-Environmental, population and community approaches to health promotion will also be addressed.
In addition, students will consider the psychological aspects of health behaviour, behavioural aspects of change, health promotion principals and frameworks, health promotion planning and implementation, principles of community development, preventive strategies, project management, health promotion research and evaluation.
Students will develop the relevant skills to apply their knowledge to a variety of significant health related issues in health and community settings. Embedded in this degree is knowledge and skills in behavioural science, counselling, and marketing which are essential for those wanting to work in the complex area of preventive health. By integrating psychology, counselling, behavioural science and marketing units, this multidisciplinary degree provides the opportunity to specialise in any of these disciplines by selecting specific units from the elective clusters.
The Bachelor of Preventive Health equips students for employment in health promotion, social marketing and community development in both the government and non – government sectors.
The Bachelor of Preventive Health may be successfully combined with the following degree programs:
•Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science
•Bachelor of Biomedical Science
Entry to these double degrees is consistent with the University’s established application process. The double degrees require 4 years of study completing units within the Bachelor of Preventive Health program and additional units within the Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science and Bachelor of Biomedical Science programs.
Requirements
No pre -requisites are required for students for students wishing to study this major. Students may wish wish to refer to the Prospective Students Office for recommended subjects.
Notes
Students may undertake study as a part-time or full-time student, commencing in First Semester (February) or in Second Semester (August), subject to unit availability. The assessment of competency in each unit consists of tutorial performance, a number of assignments or projects during the semester and a final examination.
Notre Dame has strong links with a number of universities in the United States and around the world. Students may have the opportunity of completing part of their degree at destinations including Boston, Washington DC, Indiana and in Europe.
