Graduate Certificate in Acute Mental Health
Description
The School of Nursing with the South Metropolitan Area Health Service Mental Health (SMAHSMH) and the North
Metropolitan Area Mental Health Service (NMAMHS) are conjointly providing the opportunity for Mental Health Clinical Staff to study the Graduate Certificate in Acute Mental Health. The duration of the program is one year and students will be employees of the SMAHSMH or the NMAMHS. The Graduate Certificate in Acute Mental Health has been devised and developed following extensive consultation with the profession. The course is designed to advance the knowledge and skills of participants who wish to progress a career in the exciting and growing arena of acute psychiatry. It is relevant to all clinicians (interdisciplinary) in acute mental health clinical contexts.
The units in this course have been structured to provide students with the practice and theory to work within the challenging acute environment. There are four units of study:
• Contemporary Mental Health
• Interpersonal Communication
• Professional Role Development
• Expanded Role of Mental Health Practitioner in Emergency/ Acute Psychiatric Practice

Requirements
The course will be available to students who have a health professional degree or equivalent qualification to practice in their health profession. Students must be, or eligible for, registration with their professional registering authority if applicable. Students must be practicing within the mental health area.
