DescriptionLife is full of losses, large or small, which may bring an experience of grief and these are an unavoidable part of life. People have their own individual reactions and responses to grief, yet grief is a universal human experience. This course will assist the student to develop a comprehensive knowledge of the theory of loss and grief as well as frameworks for intervention which can significantly enhance the delivery of integrated holistic health care. There are many facets of loss and grief such as disability, unemployment, death, trauma, illness, relationship breakdown, cultural dislocation and conflicts and these will be examined through the course.The University of Notre Dame Australia has a vision to enhance all Australians’ health by empowering professionals from all walks of life with the latest knowledge and in-depth understanding of a range of complex health issues arising from loss and trauma. The Graduate Certificate in Grief and Loss is offered by the School of Nursing and will allow participants to explore the universality and diversity of loss. This program will equip graduates with knowledge and skills to provide specialized care to a wide range of individuals, groups and communities who experience loss and grief as a result of some adversity. The course will take a multidisciplinary approach to learning and will draw students from a broad range of occupations. With the focus on prevention and early intervention, our graduates will hopefully be leaders or key team members of community schemes such as child protection, aged care programs, suicide prevention, chronic illness programs as well as services such as bereavement, palliative care or trauma services. RequirementsApplicants to the course will be required to have a:1. A Bachelor’s degree in a health, social work or related field 2. Relevant work experience in the field of loss and grief. 3. Employment in a setting that manages issues of loss and grief NotesThe Graduate Certificate in Grief and Loss will be delivered in an intensive on campus mode, with additional online learning and support. Each unit will have on campus workshops which are designed to encourage student interaction and the sharing of experiences.Assessment techniques including essays, case studies, literature reviews, reflective journals and online activities will be used.
