DescriptionNeurodegenerative disorders are increasing in the Australian population. Combined with an aging population, it is expected that prevalence of people suffering from neurological disorders will continue to increase over the next two decades. Continued medical developments and increasing technology means that clients suffering neurological disorders are living longer and in response to this, nursing must continue to keep pace in caring for those with disorders including Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Epilepsy and Alzheimer’s.The University of Notre Dame, Australia is offering a Graduate Certificate which explores the neurodegenerative disorders. This will allow registered nurses to examine these disorders at an in-depth level, contributing to the development of advanced knowledge and practice. The course duration is up to one year. During this time students will study 2 units per semester. The graduate certificate consists of four (4) units: 1. Advanced Nursing Assessment 2. Clinical Therapeutics – Neurodegenerative Disorders 3. Neurodegenerative Conditions and Care 4. Professional Development On completion of the graduate certificate, it is expected that graduates will have developed knowledge, skills and attributes for advanced practice in the area of Neurodegenerative Disorders. In addition, the benefits of this course include: • Enhanced Clinical Confidence • Lifelong Learning and Reflective Practice Skills • Clinical Leadership and Research Skills RequirementsApplicants to the course will be required to:1. Be eligible for registration with an Australian Registering Body. 2. Hold a Bachelor of Nursing (or equivalent) qualification. 3. Be employed or have access to a clinical setting. NotesThe Graduate Certificate in Neurodegenerative Disorders is delivered in an intensive on campus mode, with additional online learning and support. Each unit includes on campus workshops which are designed to encourage student interaction and the sharing of experiences. Simulated case based scenarios are used throughout each unit and students are encouraged to adopt reflective frameworks as the basis for each unit. Assessment techniques include case studies, essays and online interactive activities. In addition to this, opportunities for practice development projects will be offered.Successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Neurodegenerative Disorders may lead to credit toward further Graduate Diploma or Masters level study.
