DescriptionThe Master of Nursing Science (MNSc) is a professional masters degree that is exceptional preparation for your nursing career. It is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (formerly Nurses Board of Victoria).The MNSc recognises the nature of contemporary health care delivery in light of the impact of rapidly changing medical and information technologies, consumer demand and government economic and health policies. It offers graduates a higher level degree with enhanced learning outcomes while meeting the requirements for nursing registration. Our curriculum emphasises significant contemporary health problems identified as National Health Priority Areas: cardiovascular health, cancer control, injury prevention and control, mental health, diabetes mellitus, and asthma. We take a research-oriented approach to practice. This approach encourages systematic development of clinical skills using evidence-based learning, an understanding of the close links between theory and practice, and the ability to undertake self-directed life-long learning. Our teaching is based on up-to-date research which allows you to apply the most relevant theory to your practice to ensure best practice and best patient outcomes. In the final semester, following your theoretical and clinical preparation, you will undertake a specialist elective subject in an area of interest to you and a capstone practice subject to consolidate your theoretical and practical knowledge. RequirementsAdmission requirements for the Master of Nursing Science are:•a three-year bachelor degree, or equivalent, in any discipline, completed within 10 years of application. Where this degree is older than ten years, the Selection Committee will call for curriculum vitae and consider any graduate study completed in the intervening period to determine current capacity for graduate study, or significant relevant professional experience of greater than five years full-time equivalent. •meet the University's English language requirements. From all applicants, the Selection Committee will also call for: •the contact details of two professional referees; and •a supporting statement from applicants indicating their reasons for and ability to undertake the MNSc. The Selection Committee may conduct interviews to elucidate any of the matters referred to above. English language requirements All applicants must meet the University’s English language requirements. If English is not your first language, there are a number of ways of demonstrating that you have met this requirement. If you undertake the IELTS test, entry to the Master of Nursing Science requires an IELTS (Academic English only) score of 6.5 (written 7.0, no band less than 6.5). Human Anatomy for Nursing Students Applicants are assumed to have some grounding at a tertiary level in human anatomy before commencing the course. Students without such grounding can take the online subject Human Anatomy for Nursing Students to prepare for the course. Overseas qualifications If your Bachelor degree was awarded at an overseas university, your qualification will be assessed for equivalency using available resources. The Australian Government provides a qualification assessment service through Australian Education International, should you wish to submit evidence of equivalency with your application. NotesThe MNSc has a high number of contact hours. In addition to attending classes and clinical placements, you will be required to undertake personal study, write assignments, prepare for examinations and review your clinical practice.Many students need to balance study commitments with personal commitments; however, you are strongly advised not to undertake employment during semester time. At most, one shift per week is recommended. It is not advisable to undertake night shifts prior to clinical placement days to ensure patient safety.
