Master of Public Health

Description

The aim of the Master of Public Health is to provide graduates with the skills required to improve population health, through:

• Appropriate planning for the health needs of populations or specific at risk groups
• Assessment of social, behavioural and environmental determinants of health and illness
• Development and implementation of effective and efficient approaches to health services and programs
• Appropriate evaluation and improvement of population health services and programs, using appropriate research methods.

This program will provide an opportunity for you to undertake professional development and gain a strong foundation in public health. The program will be of interest to individuals of all ages, at any stage in their career, who have a basic undergraduate degree in health and are working in, or intending to work in, the area of public health.

This includes:
• Clinicians and allied health professionals
• Health planners and managers
• Individuals working in health promotion
• Health protection
• Health surveillance.

There are core courses in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health and social and ecosystem health. You are then able to go into different specialist areas of study, including public health practice, research methodology, health promotion, health management and medical statistics.

The program has a strong quantitative component. It builds on the excellent national and international reputation of the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics which has 25 years of postgraduate education and 18 years of distance learning teaching experience.

Requirements

Relevant bachelor degree in an approved health related discipline or have other qualifications approved by the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Faculty of Health. International students must have attained the relevant IELTS standard.

Notes

It is envisaged that as public health practice graduates, you will work in:
• public health units
• state and Commonwealth departments
• general practice and non-government organisations
• academic institutions.

As a health promotion graduate, you will be able to function in a wide range of Federal and State agencies as:
• health educators
• health promotion officers
• field scientist/practitioners.

As a research methodology and medical statistics graduate, you will be working in the design and implementation of population based and clinical research studies within:
• universities
• public health units and clinical services
• state and commonwealth departments
• non-government organisations.

Health management graduates will be working or planning to work as:
• public health administrators
• managers
• clinicians
• medical practitioners.

The program will provide you with essential management skills needed for the work force.
