The largest group of graduate nurses to complete their final stage of training at Wellington Hospital has been honoured.

Kerrie  Hayes, director of nursing, said the  group of 68 was the largest intake  taken on to complete the final year  of workplace training as registered  nurses.

"So many people, including  their charge nurse management,  commented on what an exceptional  group of nurses they were. They  were resilient and committed to  everything they had to do and learn."

The final year is designed as "on-the- job" training, which qualifies nurses  to work in a hospital.

Nearly all of the  68 gained employment with Capital  and Coast District Health Board.

Mrs  Hayes said many were "outstanding  stars" who had coped well during a  year of unrest that included the  move into the new hospital.

Amber  Davies, 25, who spent most of her  training time in paediatrics, said the  ceremony had given her "a fantastic  sense of achievement". She now  works in the neonatal intensive care  unit.

She rated coming to grips with  shift work as the hardest thing to  deal with in her new position.
