In the event that the current ACTU President, Sharron Burrows, is appointed to the position of General Secretary of the Brussels-based International Trade Union Confederation, next year, the current chief of the Australian Nursing Federation - Ged Kearney will fill the position.

After a sometimes controversial campaign, it was announced earlier this week that Ged Kearney has been endorsed to fill one of the most powerful positions in the trade union movement.  Some leaders on the right of the union movement such as Paul Howes of the Australian Workers Union have questioned Ged Kearney's experience and ability perform in the job.  Ged Kearney has pointed to her experience as leader of one of the largest unions in the Country - The Australian Nursing Federation, and her campaigns such as the campaign to accelerate reforms in Aged Care, as good examples of the experience that will underpin her ability to perform well as ACTU President should the position become vacant.
