OUR COURSES
Our Graduate Certificate courses prepare nurses for a rewarding career in the health and community services sector. Designed to meet contemporary industry needs, the courses provide the knowledge, skills and attitudes directly suited to working in specialist areas of health care.
We offer coursework programs that are academically challenging and professionally relevant in an environment that encourages independent learning and interaction amongst peers. Our courses also equip students with a portfolio of skills that are in demand throughout the wider community.
Graduate Certificates qualifications awarded by the College are of an equivalent standard to a qualification at other Australian higher education institutions, including universities. The College’s courses articulate into university courses, enabling advanced standing towards higher degrees.
Some courses offer funded positions to NSW Health employees.
Courses are continually reviewed in consultation with educational, clinical and professional experts in the field, to ensure clinical and professional relevance.

Our educational philosophy
The College of Nursing’s educational philosophy is based on Graduate Outcomes and interdisciplinary knowledge, skills and attributes that equip students and eventually graduates with the ability to live and work in a rapidly changing, contemporary and complex health care world. The College has identified four core outcomes that represent the values of an educated professional graduate and then three principle areas that encompass the College of Nursing.
The four core outcomes are:
- Critical, Analytical and Integrative Thinking
- Research and Inquiry
- Information Literacy
- Ethical and Professional Understanding
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program
The College offers an extensive range of Continuing Professional Development learning opportunities for students. CPD programs are short workshops offered on topics of interest or specific skills. These short seminars and workshops are developed in response to identified needs or trends in nursing and health. This option is useful for students who do not want to commit to longer-term study or those who have a particular skill/area of knowledge they wish to develop. All CPD programs attract professional development hours which enables participants to maintain a log of activities each calendar year.
The CPD calendar is available on the College website.
Distance Education Subjects
Students have the option of undertaking a single subject from the Graduate Certificate courses. This is useful for people who wish to develop more in-depth knowledge in a particular area, or those who want to sample Graduate Certificate course study prior to enrolling in a full Graduate Certificate course.
Single subjects are held over one 20-week semester and as a distance education mode of delivery and most consist of a combination of self-directed learning, assessment tasks and online workshops. In some instances, subjects that have been satisfactorily completed as single subjects may be credited towards a College graduate certificate (subject to entry requirements, satisfactory academic performance and timely enrolment in a Graduate Certificate course).
