Position Summary
This position is responsible and accountable to the General Manager through line management of Senior Nurse Manager, Nurse Manager and Nurse Unit Manager Maternity Services, to provide professional, competent and effective quality care using the principles of best practice including primary care within a cost effective and efficient environment. Services include obstetrics, accident and emergency, general medical, paediatrics and surgical patients.
The midwife is responsible for prenatal, intrapartum and postnatal maternity care provision within the hospital and outreaching into the community. The midwife may also be responsible for providing parenting classes.
Function as a professional representative of the nursing service and organisation.
Selection Criteria
Demonstrated knowledge of legislative and policy requirements that govern Registered Nursing practice.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the National Competency Standards for Registered Midwives.
Demonstrated understanding of the Families First/Integrated Perinatal Care psychosocial assessment and commitment to same.
Demonstrated experience and clinical skills in general nursing and midwifery practice.
Demonstrated high level of verbal and written communication skills, together with interpersonal and negotiation skills.
Demonstrated ability to organise and prioritise work.
Demonstrated commitment to professional development and best practice.
Registered Nurse with NSW Nurses and Midwives Board List A, with Midwifery Registration.
Current NSW drivers licence.
Principal Responsibilities
To ensure that nursing care is provided according to the current policies of NSW Health, the Greater Southern Area Health Service and Pambula District Hospital, and that legislative, policies and procedure requirements are met.
Work within the National Competency Standards for Registered Midwives.
Provide prenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care and education to women and their families in consultation with the visiting Medical Officers and the IPC team.
Communicate and work closely with the members of the Maternity team, child and family health Nurses and the FF/IPC Specialist team to implement the recommendations of the team.
Attendance and participation at the FF/IPC Specialist team meeting as the presenting midwifery clinician as required.
Acts as an advocate for the specialty area.
To ensure that nursing care is client focussed so that physiological, social and psychological needs are met.
To ensure that nursing care interventions are timely. The patients’ family, carers and significant others are considered and appropriately involved in a multidisciplinary approach to discharge planning providing a continuum of care for the patient.
To ensure that nursing care acknowledges the professional and ethical responsibilities of registered nursing/ midwifery practice.
Supervise and provide guidance and education of new graduates in nursing, trainee enrolled nurses, junior or less skilled or experienced nursing staff and nursing students in the provision of patient care. Assist in the orientation of new staff.
Ensure own competence in practice and use of equipment.
Complete mandatory education annually and participate in education programs and inservice relevant to practice.
Comply with Child Protection and Domestic Violence policies & procedures.
