Aussie speech pathologist develops iPad app in London

Date Updated:

A former Melbourne speech pathologist has developed an iPad and iPhone application for people with communication impairments.

Rebecca Bright, who now works in London, launched the application Predictable in January.

The application provides speech output for people with various speech impairments, such as diphtheria.

"To use the application, you type in your message and you are aided by a sophisticated prediction engine which predicts the same and next word based on context," Ms Bright said.

"This speeds up getting your message across. You can use it directly or via a switch."

Ms Bright said her application came after a session where she demonstrated a small handheld device used for a communication aid to a young adult.

"I realised then that it was important for AAC devices to suit the person in a range of ways, including offering social inclusivity," she said.

"The iPhone and iPad offer not only intuitive design but also has the ‘cool factor’ which is important for everyone."

Ms Bright moved to London in 2005 and began working as a locum on an elderly care ward before working with adults in inpatient rehabilitation.

Three years later, Ms Bright launched her own venture and now caters to clients who have communication or swallowing difficulties following a stroke or head injury.

"My main client group are young adults who are working on getting back to school or work following a traumatic head injury," she said.

"This is always an enjoyable group of clients to work with, who are in a period of transition in their life. With these clients, therapy needs to be very functional and meaningful for their everyday life."

Ms Bright said she loved working in London, where Australian speech pathologists are well regarded.

"The feedback I’ve had is that Australian therapists are happy to get on with the job," she said.

"Plus, our four year degree and dysphagia qualification means that we have an edge I think. Plus we tend to be good all-rounders!"
