More optometrists needed in public hospitals: OAA

More optometrists could work alongside ophthalmologists to bolster the efficiency of eye departments in public hospitals, according to the Optometrists Association Australia.

The OAA is lobbying the Federal Government to support an increase in the number of optometrists in public hospitals in a bid to improve access to primary eye health care.

OAA acting chief executive officer John Beever said the Australian optometry workforce, which is largely confined to optometric practice, could follow in the footsteps of hospitals in the United States and the United Kingdom, where policies are in place to encourage optometrists to work alongside ophthalmologists.

"Overseas colleagues in the USA and UK have a good history of collaborating with specialists in public hospitals," he said.

"In Australia, there are fewer examples of optometrists employed within a public hospital setting but the future of public health care may see a greater role for optometry there.

"A variety of work options makes for a satisfying career as well and we want that for our members."

Mr Beever said the partnership could free up ophthalmologists for other work.

"Optometrists in private practice treat refractive disorders, are responsible for the detection and diagnosis of eye diseases, treat a variety of infectious and allergic conditions and treat glaucoma patients in co-management arrangements with ophthalmologists," he said.

"The same services could be provided in public hospitals by optometrists, freeing ophthalmologists to perform functions for which they are uniquely qualified, such as cataract surgery and other eye surgeries."
