Most Queensland nurses dispute overpayments

Date of Posting:

The majority of Queensland Health nurses affected in the state’s payroll debacle will dispute being overpaid, according to the Queensland Nurses Union.

QNU secretary Beth Mohle said most members believe they have not been overpaid.

“There are some of our members who have incurred an overpayment who want to pay it back. They are happy to get it out of the way,” she said.

“But most of our members don’t fall into that category. They are pretty cranky and are challenging it.

“Members are angry, frustrated and fed up and wish it could all be behind them.

“We understand people’s anger. We share it totally because we have been living this hell with them since the end of March.”

Letters have been sent to 38,000 of the 80,000 public health workforce as the State Government moves to claim back about $62 million in overpayments.

There have been reports of nurses quitting in disgust while others are concerned it will be too hard to prove cases of alleged overpayments.

Ms Mohle said the union has encouraged members to keep a record of their pay since news of the debacle first broke last year.

She said nurses who had not kept records can request information detailing hours worked and pay, including rosters, timesheets and payslips.

Those who disagree they have been overpaid will be appointed a case manager.

Ms Mohle said the payroll system was improving but was still a long way from being error-free.

“The system is stabilising…but there are still some staff who are constantly being mucked around.

“We are not there yet, we are months off.

“Members really need to be vigilant about their pay slips and check them every fortnight until the system is fixed.”
