Pharmacies could give 'the jab'

Pharmacies in New South Wales could become the first in Australia to deliver vaccines. Former shadow health minister Jillian Skinner, speaking at a recent NSW Pharmacy Guild of Australia event, said the incoming Liberal Government would consider proposals to allow pharmacists be involved in vaccination programs to make community pharmacies a "one-stop health centre". The comments have won the support of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, which is campaigning for pharmacies to take an active role in immunisations, based on the success of international models. PSA president Warwick Plunkett said while there first needed to be discussion with the medical profession, he expected vaccines in community pharmacies could become a reality within the new state government’s term in office. "I think that’s where we are heading in terms of our professional service delivery," he said. "I think at some stage in the future, vaccines will be administered in the scope of the pharmacy." The PSA is lobbying for appropriately trained health professionals, such as a nurse or a trained pharmacist, to administer the vaccines. Mr Plunkett said many community pharmacies already employ nurses to deliver wound or baby care and those nurses could also deliver immunisation services in pharmacies. "My preference would be that it is a nurse that is doing that in a pharmacy," he said. "I think that’s a more natural professional function for a nurse than it is for a pharmacist. "Pharmacists are quite capable of doing it but it’s not part of their usual training. We would see that initially as a more acceptable way to go." Pharmacists in the United States are authorised to administer vaccines as are appropriately qualified and trained pharmacists in the United Kingdom.
