Pharmacists back $97 million national software roll out

Date Updated:

A $97 million national software roll out at pharmacies across Australia will help pharmacists avoid mistakes when dispensing medication.

The software, set to be introduced within the next two years, has won the support of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia.

PSA spokesman Peter Waterman welcomed the new computer program, which will allow pharmacists to track patients’ drug intake and warn against risks when combining different drugs.

"(The program) will promote communication between pharmacists, prescribes and consumers, improve the quality use of medicines and lead to improved health outcomes for all consumers," he said.

Researchers from the University of Tasmania have been commissioned to develop and test the program, which will assist pharmacists in helping patients better manage their medications.

University of Tasmania Professor Gregory Peterson said it was becoming more difficult for pharmacists to manage the rising demand for prescription medication.

"Health consumer groups have been involved and they can also see the benefits, they know the problems that medications can cause in society, so anything like this which encourages interventions and encourages communication and the empowerment of patients – they can see that benefit," he said.

Meanwhile, the PSA has announced its membership base has topped 15,000 for the first time, making it the primary representative body for pharmacists across all sectors in Australia.

To coincide with the start of the 5th Community Pharmacy Agreement, the organisation has launched a pharmacy support program available to all pharmacies in Australia.

The program will assist pharmacies to deliver professional services that suit their business and the needs of their local area.
