Physiotherapy stats revealed

More than two thirds of Australia’s physiotherapists are aged under 44 and physiotherapy is the fifth largest of the regulated professions, according to the latest information.
New data on all 10 professions regulated under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency has been revealed in the 2010-11 annual AHPRA and National Boards’ annual report.
The Physiotherapy Board of Australia has released information showing there were 22,384 physiotherapists registered to practise in Australia on June 30 this year, and about 68 per cent are aged between 20 and 44 years.
There were 111 complaints lodged about registered physiotherapists during the year, with the Board and the Physiotherapy Council in NSW taking immediate action on the registration of six practitioners, while there were five mandatory notifications made about physiotherapists.
Meanwhile, pharmacy has the largest proportion of young practitioners, with the average pharmacist being female, aged 25 to 29 years and practising in New South Wales.
Pharmacy Board of Australia information shows there are 25,944 pharmacists registered to practice in Australia, including 230 pharmacists aged 80 and over.
The data shows 419 complaints were made against pharmacists, with the board considering action against 18 pharmacists.
As a result, five pharmacists had their registration suspended and six had conditions imposed on their registration while two resulted in acceptance of undertaking on registration.
There were also 15 mandatory notifications made about pharmacists.
In other information, the Osteopathy Board of Australia revealed there were 1595 osteopaths registered to practise on June 30 this year, with 71 per cent aged between 20 and 44 years.
