Registration renewal has begun for almost 150,000 Australian health practitioners.

Eight professions spanning chiropractic, dental, optometry, osteopathy, pharmacy, physiotherapy, podiatry and psychology are due to renew their registration before November 30.

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) has launched its renewal campaign, including renewal reminder emails and letters, in a bid to ensure health practitioners meet the new national renewal date.

The campaign comes after practitioners in some states and territories renewed their registration in June for five months, and are now due to renew again before the end of November.

More than 520,000 Australian health practitioners across 10 professions are registered with the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme.

Australia is the first country in the world to introduce a National Registration and Accreditation Scheme regulating health practitioners, which has transferred the functions from 85 separate health practitioner boards to 10 national boards.

AHPRA figures show more than 46,000 new health practitioners have registered since July 1 last year and there have been 620,000 certificates of registration issued to health practitioners across Australia, with many practitioners now having renewed more than once under the national scheme.

Most practitioners are renewing online, with 80 percent of those with renewals due in May and June this year renewed online, up from 60 percent when the national scheme was first introduced last year.
