Speech pathology on wheels
Date of Posting:
A unique speech pathology clinic is racking up the kilometres in New South Wales.
Launched two years ago, Chit-A-Chat Speech Pathology is a completely mobile service which has quickly grown to cover the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, Central Coast, Muswellbrook, Cessnock, Singleton and Hunter areas and services more than 50 schools.
Chit-A-Chat speech pathologist Jackie Parsons said the mobile clinic was the largest in the area and travelled to clients at no extra cost.
“Many mobile services have clinics and do a limited number of out calls. We, on the other hand, are completely mobile,” she said.
“Parents don't have to organise an out of school appointment - we can go to the child's school or preschool and conduct therapy.
“With our elder patients, mobility can be an issue so having someone that comes to them is ideal.
“Us going to them also gives us the opportunity to work closely with teachers, aides, nurses or carers to provide a more holistic approach to intervention.
“People are also a lot more comfortable in familiar surroundings.”
Ms Parsons said the service employed 11 speech pathologists who work with infants through to older people, in areas such as speech and articulation, receptive and expressive language, voice, fluency and stuttering, swallowing, phonological awareness and literacy. “We work with a vast variety of conditions including autism, ADHD, PDD, brain injury and stroke, Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, Parkinson's and hearing impairment,” she said.
