Victorian patient transport service collapses

Date Updated:

Up to 70 staff at a Victorian non-emergency patient transport service have lost their jobs, after the Horsham-based company Ambicare folded.

The company, which operates out of Horsham, Ballarat, Bendigo, Mildura, Warrnambool and Hamilton, went into liquidation earlier this week.

First established in 1993, Ambicare was the only privately owned operator who designed and fabricated its own vehicles to meet patient needs.

The company transferred about 600 inter-hospital, TAC and Workcover patients a month, throughout Victoria and interstate for admission procedures and to specialist appointments.

Ambicare, which operated a fleet of about 40 ambulances and cars across regional Victoria, was wound up and placed in the hands of Melbourne liquidators Pitcher Partners.

Ambulance Employees Australia Victoria general secretary Steve McGhie said those who lost their jobs included transport patient officers and qualified ambulance attendants.

Mr McGhie said the end of the service would put even more pressure on Ambulance Victoria’s already stretched resources.

"Ambulance Victoria does not have enough resources to do emergency response and non-emergency response," he said.

"If they are going to utilise emergency paramedics and they are taking up some of this case load, this will have an affect on emergency response times."

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said patients would not be affected by the changes.

The Victorian State Government has pledged an extra 34 staff for non-emergency transfers but those crews are yet to be employed.
