Volunteer occupational therapists wanted
Date of Posting:
Australian Volunteers International is searching for three occupational therapists to continue its vital work overseas. The organisation, which has been at the forefront of international volunteering for nearly 60 years, is on the hunt for occupational therapists to work in Lesotho, South Africa and Lebanon. AVI has enabled more than 7500 Australians to find their place in the world through opportunities to work in developing communities and is now advertising more than 100 new assignments across a range of sectors. The Lesotho Department of Social Welfare has an acute shortage of OTs for its new community-based rehabilitation program for people with disabilities. The program has been launched in two districts and there are plans to extend it to a further eight districts in the country. In South Africa, the renowned Cheshire Home mission is on the lookout for an OT to assist people with disabilities at their Randburg home. The volunteer will need to be able to engage with the residents, recommend environment modification and to work with a team to improve the physical ability of residents. AVI is also seeking an OT to work with Palestinian refugees in South Lebanon. The Nabil Badran Centre, which focuses on early intervention for children with disabilities, urgently requires an OT. There are currently no Palestinian occupational therapists working in South Lebanon with Palestinians due to language and cost barriers. Volunteers with AIV receive airfares, accommodation, living allowances, insurance and ongoing support.
