Palliative Care is the active total care of people whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment. Care is delivered by co-ordinated medical, nursing and allied health services that are provided, where possible, in the environment of the person's choice. Control of pain, of other symptoms and of psychological, emotional and spiritual problems is paramount.
The goal of palliative care is achievement of the best possible quality of life for patients, and for their families and friends. Many aspects of palliative care are also applicable earlier in the course of the illness in conjunction with treatment aimed at cure.
Allied Health Services
The Allied Health Service comprises of occupational therapists, physiotherapists, pharmacists and social workers. These professionals work with the medical and nursing staff as a team of experts, each member providing specific skills to support the patient's health care needs and to achieve treatment goals.
